Why I Haven’t Done Any Planning for 2016 Yet

If you take a few minutes and scroll through my blog, you’ll see a significant number of posts and references to sitting down and planning out your year before January 1 and how that is a good thing.HappyNewYear_01

And … here I am, on January 11, 2016, admitting that I’ve done none of that this year.

Even worse, I haven’t even figured out a theme or a word for 2016 yet.

Other than some rough planning in my head as to what I want to accomplish, I’ve done nothing. Nada. Zip.

It’s not that I don’t believe in goals and planning anymore. I still even believe in the studies, like that famous Harvard study, that shows that people who write down their goals are far more likely to actually accomplish them.

And, even more puzzling, writing down my goals and plans HAS worked for me. There is no question that I have gotten more things done over the years because I planned them out.

My #1 Secret to Transforming Yourself and Your Biz in 2014

I just read a startling (and very sad) statistic — Monday, Jan 20 is supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

Why? Because it’s 3 weeks after New Year’s Day and now it’s just sinking in to most people that all the promise and hope and resolutions they started 2014 with is nothing more than a house of cards. Nothing has changed from last year and, even worst, nothing will change.

Yikes. No wonder why everyone is depressed.

However, there IS good news. This doesn’t have to be your reality. You CAN make sure 2014 is different from all the disappointing years that have come before.

Now I talk about this in way more detail in my podcast PW Unplugged — Is 2014 Starting Off Strong? Or is it Turning Into a Dud? (Worse — the Same Dud as 2013) but I wanted to share one of the secrets right here in case you haven’t had time to listen to it quite yet.

It lies in the famous Einstein quote “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

This quote literally helped transform my business from solo-peneur to owner of a copywriting company, and now I’m using it again to take my biz to the next level.

So how does this apply to you and how you can make sure 2014 is not a same-old, same-old frustrating repeat? Well, one thing is to take a look at how you approach the start of your year. Are you someone who does a detailed, specific plan? Do you do nothing at all? Or is it something in between?

Whatever it is, this year, do something completely different. If you’re a planner, put the plan away and see how it feels to not have a plan. Or maybe try planning a different way than you normally do. If you don’t plan, block off time this week to put a plan in place.

Are you squirming a bit? Good — you should be feeling uncomfortable. That’s how you know you’re on the right path to breaking the mold of how your years always seem to turn out.

3 Steps to IMPLEMENTING Your 2014 Marketing Plan

You just put the finishing touches on your kick-butt marketing plan that’s going to skyrocket your business. Hooray!

Only problem is that kick-butt marketing plan isn’t going to do a thing for your business unless you actually put it into action. And that, alas, is where most marketing plans end up — a really good idea that never got implemented.

So, how do you stop that from happening? Here are 3 steps to help you move from thinking to doing.

1. Figure out what you need to be doing versus what you can get someone else to do. Look, there’s no reason why YOU have to do all the implementation. Get some help!

If you already have a team, fantastic! Now you just have to start delegating. If you don’t have a team or you don’t have the right person on your team to do a specific job (for instance, a technical person to fix your shopping cart) then you need to put finding that person to your to-do list. In the short-term, yes it does add to your workload, but in the long-term, it will save you a lot of time.

2. Block off time in your calendar to work on your plan. The only way these things are going to get done is if you actually take the time to work on them. So start by actually setting aside the time.

You may be someone who works better in shorter, more frequent bursts of time (15 or 20 minutes every day) versus a longer time less frequently (2 hours or half a day once a week). Only you know what appeals to you, and I would suggest scheduling your time accordingly. (Look, it’s tough enough to get things done; you might as well make it easier for yourself by working with your natural tendencies than against them.)

3. Set yourself up for success. Just because you set the time aside doesn’t mean you’ll actually get anything done on your plan during that time. So you need to keep yourself focused and motivated and don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked.

Now there’s no question that’s much easier said than done. So how do you do that? Here are a few tips to try:

• Remind yourself WHY you’re doing this. Is it so you’ll be able to take care of your family better? Is it because you want to sell a million copies of your book? Is it because you’re so tired of the way things are you’re ready for a change? Whatever it is, remind yourself of the bigger WHY before you sit down to work. That will keep your motivation up.

• Make it a special time just for you. Maybe light a candle, put on some favorite music or pour yourself a fave cup of tea. Or maybe you head out to a local Starbucks to hang out. Whatever it is, make it special — something you look forward to.

• Create a “squirrel file.” If you ever watched the movie “Up,” there’s a talking dog in it that keeps getting distracted by squirrels. So he’ll be talking and in the middle he’ll shout “squirrel!” and completely lose his train of thought.

As entrepreneurs, we are surrounded by squirrels. And there’s no better time for the squirrels to come and play then during this time we’ve set aside to implement our marketing plan. “Oh, I’ll get to my plan as soon as I get this email out…as soon as I return this phone call…as soon as I clean up my desk.”

You get the idea.

So the way to keep the squirrels away is to create a “squirrel file” (or call it something fun like “squirrel nest”). Any of those squirrels come running out, capture it and stick it in the file to work on “later.” If you want, you can even designate a time to work on all those squirrels.

But the most important thing to do is DECIDE you really ARE going to implement your plan. Once you do that, the rest will fall into place.

3 Tips to Getting Your 2014 Marketing Plan Together

It’s that time of year to make sure your marketing plan is all ready to go — just in time to kick off the sparkling New Year that’s right around the corner.

But how do you get a marketing plan together that will actually get you the results you’re looking for? Here are 3 tips to get you started:

1. Start with the end in mind. Make sure you figure out specific and REALISTIC goals. While I’m all for having a hit-it-out-of-the-park goal (like building your list to 10K when you have 500 on it right now), you should also have a goal that’s doable AND will make you happy if you reach it.

Knowing your goals will help guide where you need to put your focus. And I would pick no more than 3-5 top ones to get done in 2014 (plus some secondary strategies to round out your calendar). So, for instance, maybe you want to build your list, launch a high-end group mastermind program and get your book done as your main goals. And maybe as part of your high-end group program launch, you also have a smaller launch as a lead in.

So now you have 3 big rocks you can get into your calendar — a product launch, a high-end group launch and a book launch. Plus you have list-building activities that need to happen regularly. Once you’ve plugged those in, now you need to make sure you have both long-term and short-term marketing covered (which is #2).

2. Do you have a balance between long-term and short-term marketing activities? Long-term are tactics like building your list and nurturing your list (for instance sending a regular ezine). Short-term are tactics like having a sale or a launch that bring money in the door right now.

Successful businesses have a balance of both throughout the year — the long-term that will lead to a healthy business with a regular stream of leads and clients and short-term for cash flow.

So now that you have your big rocks, do you see holes in either your short-term or long-term? Do you have your cash-flow covered from month-to-month? Do you have your list-building and list-nurturing activities in there? Now is the time to adjust accordingly.

3. Are the marketing activities you’ve committed to things you enjoy? My personal feeling is the reason why entrepreneurs fail when it comes to marketing is they focus their efforts on what they feel like they SHOULD be doing, rather than what they LOVE doing. There are so many ways to market yourself — videos, podcasts, writing blogs, connecting on social networking, etc. — that I guarantee there is SOMETHING you enjoy doing. So figure out what that is and do that activity. Don’t worry about the rest. Get one thing done and get it done right, and the rest will fall into place.

Now, once you’ve figured out what you love doing, don’t forget to actually build those activities into your plan. Because it doesn’t matter how great of a plan you’ve put together, if you don’t actually implement anything in the New Year, you’re not going to get the results you’re looking for.

Your 2013 Mid-Year Check-In — 5 Steps to End 2013 With a Bang Rather Than a Whimper

With 2013 half over, it’s time to pause, take a breath, and see if you’re on track with your goals.

This is an essential part of running a successful business — taking structured time throughout the year to work ON your biz and make sure the path you’re on is, in fact, the path you want to be on.

Don’t do this and you’re just asking to build a biz that doesn’t serve you (not to mention waking up one more morning and realizing your actual results are nowhere near what you want them to be).

We don’t want that to happen to you so let’s get started with your Mid-Year Check-In.

Now there are a lot of ways to do this, I’ll share some steps I use and you can modify or implement to make it work for you.

1. Block off time in your calendar. Maybe it’s a couple of hours, maybe it’s a full day, but it’s important to make this commitment to yourself.

2. Gather the necessary documents. You’ll need your marketing calendar and your revenue report, plus you’ll need the goals and plan you put together at the beginning of 2013. (What? You didn’t write down your goals or put a plan together for 2013? Well let’s put that aside for now — but know we’ll be coming back to that in another article.)

3. Take some time to analyze where your biz is right now. Now this is NOT about judging yourself or your biz, all you’re doing is taking a realistic picture of where your biz is at this moment. And I also want you to review your initial 2013 goals and plans.(If you have them — if you don’t, I suspect you have some hazy idea in your head where you wanted to be in your biz at this point in 2013 so take some time to write that down just so you have something to compare.)

Where are you on track? Where are you off track? The places where you’re off track, was there a time this year where things were clicking and then they stopped? And how off track are you?

And for all the places where you’re on track — give yourself a big congratulations!

4. Okay so now that you know where you are and how that compares to where you wanted to go, now it’s time to look at the rest of the year. Do you want to continue on the same path? Do you want to change paths? Did you lose the path and you need to retrace your steps to get back on the path?

This might be a good place to do a little journaling or maybe some meditation or some other sort of inner check in to decide what you want the rest of your year to look like.

5. Put your plan together. Get out all your calendars — your meeting calendar and your marketing/promo calendar — and actually put your plan to paper. This is CRUCIAL — successful people have WRITTEN plans and goals and you are FAR more likely to actually achieve your goals if they’re written down. (And this isn’t just me saying it — there’s an actual study out there about it.)

And I have 2 bonus tips — first make sure you give yourself a pat on the back — this is FANTASTIC you did this for yourself. And don’t forget to start working your plan (a plan is great but now it’s time to actually implement).

3 Steps to Starting the New Year on The Right Foot for Your Business

There’s no better time to take stock of your business than the time between the end of one year and the beginning of the next. It’s “out with the old, in with the new” and that includes out with anything that isn’t serving you or your business at the highest level, and in with what you want your business to look like.

To help you get on track for the fresh New Year and all its possibilities, I thought I’d share 3 simple steps to get you and your business started on the right foot.

1. Start by cleaning out the old year. Are you surrounded by stacks of papers or old files? Now is the time to clean those up and make room for all the new business and opportunities that are bound to come your way (unless there’s no room for them).

What about old products or programs? Is everything you’re offering in your business still a good fit? Or maybe there’s something you’ve outgrown or doesn’t work with your brand anymore?

And don’t forget to look at your mindset or your habits. What are you still not doing you know you should be? What habits or blocks are you finally ready to ditch for good?

Get it all out there. Write everything down you want to throw out with the old year. Then you may want to destroy it — burn the paper or shred it. Remember, this is all about clearing away what you don’t want or don’t need anymore.

2. Be grateful for what you HAVE accomplished. Now that you’ve gotten rid of the old and worn out, don’t forget to take a moment and write down everything you’ve accomplished last year. What are you grateful for? What are you most proud of? It’s time to celebrate your accomplishments — take the time to do this. (If you’re anything like me, this is the first thing to go. It’s difficult for me to celebrate anything, I’m constantly looking at all the things I WANTED to do and didn’t.)

3. Now, get set up for the New Year. Some of the things I do include getting my new calendar in place and writing down my goals in it. Then I put together a marketing and promotional plan for the year so I can reach those goals.

You also may want to take some time to lay out a plan for getting rid of those blocks. Is there a program you need to buy? A coach you need to hire? Or maybe there’s something you need to implement. (Ditto for the changing those habits — what do you need to do to ditch those old habits that no longer serve you for good?)

Now, when you set up a plan, make sure you do what many people do when training their dogs — set yourself up for success. Create the plan with your success in mind. Don’t make it so overwhelming or paint yourself in a corner so there’s no way for you to succeed. Push yourself but be realistic too. There’s no shame in taking small steps toward your goal — the only shame is making yourself feel bad because you didn’t give yourself a realistic plan to meet your goals.

And, whatever you do, don’t forget to celebrate! You deserve it.
