It’s what we all dream about, right? Being able to make money doing what we’re most passionate about. Whether that’s running a profitable business or a well-funded nonprofit organization or successfully selling your books or other art, it’s what so many of us long to do.
Yet, so few of us ever actually do make money from our passions. Why is that?
Well, these three reasons may shed some light on that, as well as give you a few tips if you’d like to make a shift.
- It’s easier to NOT make money off what you’re most passionate about. And I’m talking about more than just simple math (i.e. you have a very small number of things you’re most passionate about whereas there are lots and lots of ways to make money). What I feel is the real problem is how many of us settle on something we’re “good” at, rather than what we dream about doing.
We do this because it’s easier. Likely no one ever told you not to do whatever it is that isn’t your passion — but you may have heard plenty of folks tell you not to follow your dream. In some cases, the people telling you not to go for it had your best intentions in mind — maybe they didn’t want to see you hurt or they wanted you to succeed financially and didn’t believe you could following your passions. In other cases, maybe they were projecting their own crushed dreams on you, or were so unhappy or so stuck in their own fears all that would make them happy is try and drag you down.
At the end of the day, it probably doesn’t matter why it happened — you’re still stuck with your own set of fears and worries and negative beliefs and “shoulds” — so you decided (either consciously or unconsciously) it was far easier to do this other thing you’re “good” at because it’s “safe” and you don’t have to confront the noise in your head.
Alas, your dreams don’t go away just because you don’t think they’re “convenient” or “possible” — they tend to get louder themselves until one day, you realize you can no longer not live your life pursuing what you’re most passionate about.
While we all have our own path to follow, if this is resonating with you, I would like to invite you to start taking some steps toward following your passions TODAY instead of waiting until it’s no longer a choice. Chances are, it will be a far more disruptive and painful transition if you wait, plus if you do it now you may have the option to build a bridge to making money with your passions if you so choose. (If you wait until it’s no longer an option, typically what happens is everything ends up being burned down, so there’s nothing to build a bridge too.)
- It’s not clear what exactly is your passion, you just know it’s not what you’re doing. Like the first reason, because you’re not clear, it’s easier to simply not follow your passion. After all, if you started trying to follow your passion, you’d need to know what it is first. And, to do that, you’d likely need to do some deep inner work to clear the “noise” (worry, anxiety, fear, anger, grief, etc.) so you could actually hear what your inner guidance is telling you to do, and then maybe do additional work to get clear on what it actually is you’re supposed to be doing.
However, just because you’re not clear right now doesn’t mean you won’t end up burning it all to the ground one day. You know in your heart there’s something else you’re supposed to be doing, even if you don’t know what it is, and there may come a time where your heart decides it’s tired of not being listened to. That feeling you have inside you, telling you that what you’re doing isn’t really “it” — that feeling isn’t going to go away just because you’re ignoring it or burying it or pushing it away. The best thing you can do is start taking steps now to honor it — either by taking some action toward getting clear or to simply work through the crap in your head so you can listen to your inner guidance.
- It’s not showing up the way you thought it would. Maybe you took the plunge and started a business, only to discover it’s not what you expected and you don’t actually like what you’re doing. Or you’re passionate about something you don’t know how to make money off of. Or maybe you really thought your passion was to do something a specific way, like maybe you’re an artist and you thought you need to be in a studio every day, but instead you find you’ve lost all your inspiration when you’re all by yourself in a studio.
In these cases, it’s helpful to surrender and trust — the Divine (whether you think of that as God or Source or the Universe or your own inner guidance or a combination) knows what it’s doing and has got this. The more you fight or try and impose your will on what you think you want, the more it’s either not going to happen or it’s going to be more difficult, more complicated, and just not falling into place the way you hoped.
But if you surrender and trust, you’ll likely find yourself on a path you may not have even known was there, and while it’s nothing what you thought it was going to be, somehow it’s all coming together.
Now, it’s not easy to surrender and trust — so again, doing the inner work and clearing the “noise” out of your head makes it far easier to surrender and trust.
So, what do all of these reasons have in common? Doing the inner work and clearing out the worry, anxiety, grief, fear, anger, etc. out of your head is going to allow you to actually get on the path to living your passion. As someone who has done a lot of that inner work, it’s not easy — but it’s definitely worth it.
Hence, why it’s “easier” to not follow your passions — because then you don’t have to come face to face with your inner demons and shadows. But only by loving and integrating all the lost pieces of yourself, even the super hard ones to love, will you discover the path to making money with your passion.
But, if you’re not willing to do that work, then it’s going to be a lot tougher, if not impossible, to actually make money with your passion.
The choice is yours.
(Note — if you’re wondering how you can clear the noise out of your head, my next book “Love-Based Money and Mindset” is going to cover exactly what you need to do to move through all your fear-based emotions so you can find your way back to peace, love, joy and abundance. It will be going on sale Aug/Sept of 2016.)
