So, last week’s exercise was creating a Creativity Journal, so your creativity had an actual physical place to be, well, creative.
But, physical space is only part of the equation. You also need to give your creativity time and mental space.
That’s what I want to challenge all of you this week — to create time and space in your busy, crazy, packed schedule to actually BE creative. (You could even use your Creativity Journal during your creative time! How’s that for being doubly creative? 🙂 )
Up for it? Fabulous — here are a few tips to get you started:
* Block off the time in your calendar. Yes, really. I know, I know — it seems rather uncreative to be blocking time off to be creative, but you and I both know if you don’t block it off, it ain’t happening. (Also, it’s never a bad idea to let the muse know the two of you have a date at such-and-such time.)
* Get clear and be TRUTHFUL about how much time and space you need and want to be creative. I have a friend who is a spiritual teacher but if she doesn’t do art every couple of days, she gets cranky and downright unspiritual. You may not need that much time or you may need more time. But at least ask yourself how much time and space you would love for your creativity and then see what you can do to schedule it in. (And a great creativity exercise may be asking your creativity how to creativity adjust your schedule to get it all done.)
* If you can only block off an hour a week or an hour every other week, start there and don’t beat yourself up. Look, you gotta start somewhere and even if your Inner Child wants more play time than you feel you can give right now, do what you feel like you can without adding undue stress to your life. (And you may want to have a nice chat with your Inner Child while you’re at it.)
* January is a wonderful time to dream. As I talked about in Life, Biz and the Pursuit of Happiness — the entire month of January is a fabulous time to dream about what you want to accomplish in 2015. So if you can, give yourself LOTS of time and space for all sorts of dreaming and creativity this month.
Would love to hear your thoughts and how this works out for you.
