“I am so confused about blogging, I have a blog but just don’t know how to get it out there so people can see it, nor do I understand the RSS feature. I have only used my social media (FB, LinkedIn and Spiritual Networks) to announce my blog posting. Can you help me with how to do this right and efficiently? Thank you.”
Hi Wendy — so glad you wrote in!
First off, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Basically how you can use it is to automate your blog promotion — for instance you can add that feed into a program such as HootSuite and every time you post, the article will show up on various social networking platforms.
Now the fact you announce your blog posts are a great first step, but there are certainly other things you can do.
1. Make it clear WHY someone should go to your blog — are you giving them a solution to a problem they have? Are you offering a bit of inspiration? Is it entertaining?
Now one way you do this is to wait a few days after you first post the article on your blog, and then repost the link on your various social media platforms with an additional comment telling them why they should check out that post. This can also help keep your various posts alive on social media platforms.
2. If you’re on a social networking platform that has groups or communities, make sure you join ones where you’ll find your ideal clients. And if someone on the group posts a question that your blog post answers, reply back with a short summary of what you recommend with a link to your post if they want to read more. (So for this one, you can be promoting all sort of posts, even your older ones — whatever is appropriate to what you see as a discussion in these groups.)
3. Promote someone else in your post — maybe you add a quote or give them a shout out or even republish part of their article (with permission of course). And then, on social media, you have a reason to tag them — and if they respond with a like or a comment, that will help you reach more folks.
(Note — PLEASE don’t tag people just to tag them with no reason in the article why you’re tagging them. That’s how you get folks upset with you.)
4. If people DO respond to you — either comment on your blog or comment in the social networking platform — take the time to respond back (and if appropriate, even thank them if they did something like repost or share your link). You want to encourage people to interact with you, and the only way that’s going to happen is if you actually interact with them.
Now it’s your turn — have any questions about promoting your blog on social networking platforms? Or if you have a question about marketing, business or writing copy, feel free to put in the comment section and I’ll answer those in a future Ask PW column.
